A Note from Vinh
Thank you so much for picking up my very first book.
Growing up, I was painfully shy. My family had come to Australia as refugees from Vietnam, English was my third language, and for most of my childhood I was terrified of speaking up. I had thoughts I wanted to share, ideas I wanted to contribute, parts of myself I wanted people to know. I just didn't know how to get them out.
For a long time, I assumed that was simply who I was. Confident people were confident. Charismatic people were charismatic. Great storytellers were born that way. Some people just had the gift of walking into a room and being heard, seen, and understood.
Thankfully, I was wrong.
Over the years, I learned that your voice is an instrument. So is your body. Storytelling is a skill. Listening is a skill. All of it can be practised and improved. And as we become better communicators, something beautiful happens: we give people the chance to experience more of us. More of our ideas, our humour, our care, the thoughts and feelings that used to stay trapped inside.
When we learn to listen better, we give ourselves the same chance with them.
Please remember this: the way you communicate right now is just a series of behaviours, and behaviours can change. Don't hold so tightly to who you are today that you deny the future version of yourself a chance. The shy kid I once was could never have imagined the life I live now, teaching communication around the world and helping others find their voice.
I changed because I learned what to practise. I believe you can too. I hope this book helps you be heard, be seen, and connect more deeply with the people who matter most.
